Summer is upon us in Sydney. We didn’t really have a spring and now wham! Here come those 35 degree days! After a long run, I was so dehydrated and hungry only a smoothie would do for post run brekkie. I had also recently been sent a few sample packs of Boomers Protein so I thought I’d bust them out and give them a go.
Protein supplements are not mandatory after a sleeve, but they can be helpful if you’re struggling to get enough in via food alone (more info on how much you need in this post). There are also so many out there and I know it can be hard to choose. Ideally you want to go for a Whey Protein if you can. Boomers offer two – a whey protein isolate and a whey protein concentrate. Both are dairy proteins but the isolate has a little less carbohydrate and fat so is higher in protein per serve (26.6g per 30g serve which is higher than most other brands). I opened the Whey Protein Isolate and it looks like a simple white milk powder. A 30g serve isn’t huge either, (only about 2 tbs) so to get that amount of protein in such a small volume is excellent. I chucked it in our blender with the rest of the ingredients below and away we went.
So, how’d it taste? I didn’t even notice the Boomers Whey Protein Isolate in my smoothie and that’s a good thing! There were no weird after tastes and no lumpy or gritty bits. It honestly just tasted like a normal dairy smoothie, but it kept me fuller for longer because of the extra protein. I’d definitely use them again. Cat wasn’t quite so impressed, but enjoyed his morning in the sun anyway!
Make 1 bariatric serve (~1 cup)
Ingredients
Throw everything in your blender and away you go! You’ll get approximately 30g of protein in this smoothie.
If you can’t have dairy then a vegetarian option such a rice or pea protein is the next best. Boomers have a brown rice protein with 25g protein per serve, but I haven’t tried it yet. I will let you know when I do! I’d love to hear if you have tried it or if you have a favourite smoothie recipe – please comment below.
